21 members of
Woking DFAS enjoyed a five day visit to
Krakow. We were met by Anna, a superb
guide whose knowledge of art,
architecture and history, both ancient
and modern greatly enhanced our visit.
Our hotel was centrally located which
meant that we could walk to many places
and enjoy both lunches and dinners
without having to go far. We are also
able to enjoy the many concerts going on
around the square.
We visited
the Jewish quarter and learnt of its
remarkable history. We spent time in the
vast medieval market square, saw the
Jagiellonian University where Copernicus
studied and saw the amazing carved
reredos at St Mary’s cathedral. The
medieval Wawel Castle and all its
treasures were not be missed. We saw
great things at the Pieskowa Skala
including the icon of the Black Madonna.

A highlight
of trip was to the Royal Salt Mines at
Wichiczka – a labyrinth of tunnels
spanning 300 Ks over nine levels. In St
Kinga’s Chapel everything in this 50 m
long chapel is carved from salt,
including the alter, banisters and
chandeliers.
Most of us
went on to the holocaust site at
Auschwitz.
